  • Cedar removal in Ealing – London tree care

On Wednesday 3rd July,  Tom Boswell Tree Services, specialists in London tree care dispatched the Red team, consisting of Callum, Gary, John and Freddie. You may be wondering why the red team was needed? Well within the London borough of Ealing a big Cedar tree had several large limbs which our client,  Grenville, was concerned about. Leaving the tree could have caused serious damage. Therefore, on balance it was the right call to safely remove the tree.
Callum and the team carefully lowered the tree to the ground and chipped the branches. Our job was made much easier by Grenville as they took some time out to protect a near by small Oak tree. Constructing a wooden shelter to keep it safe. Which you can see in the picture below. We will have to speak with Grenville about buying / borrowing this from him in the future!

The lower trunk section of the tree was felled in one go, in the hope we can shape a bench out of it in the future. Woodcarving is something we are looking to be more active in this year. If anyone knows any wood carvers out there please send them our way so we can have look at options of recycling more tree trunks into benches, tables and chairs – mushrooms are so last season….
Thanks to Grenville for looking after the guys so well and let’s hope the little Oak will enjoy the improved space!

Tree Surgeon Near Me: The Challenges of Tree Work in Spring

Tree Surgeon Near Me The Challenges of Tree Work in Spring The jobs might get shuffled around during this time of year but it’s a small price to pay in the wider scheme of things. We at Tom Boswell Tree Services, check cavities in trees with great care this time of year. Good thing we did in this tree, since this woodpecker was peacefully living inside! Woodpeckers tap on tree trunks in order to find insects living in the bark, they also do this to excavate nest cavities. These birds originally eat insects, fruit, acorns and nuts. They are a global creature that are found particularly in wooded areas. The only places on earth that does not have woodpeckers are Australia and New Zealand. Both male and female woodpeckers help each other to excavate in a tree to incubate (sit on) eggs for two weeks. When the eggs hatch, the woodpeckers are blind and featherless. The new woodpeckers usually leave the nest after 25-30 days.

  • Chiswick – Giant Japanese Maple

    Chiswick – Giant Japanese Maple!

Chiswick-Giant-Japanese-Maple Chiswick-Giant-Japanese-Maple   Sam and James did a marvellous job on one of the biggest Japanese Maples we’ve seen, in Chiswick, London. Sam had pruned this Maple 3 years ago but judging by the regrowth and vitality of the tree it was certainly planted in a happy place. It’s always satisfying to get continuity in caring for trees and it was great Sam had the opportunity to return to this Maple. Japanese Maples are usually small trees that flower in early to mid spring. Most of them grow very slowly. They are perfect in a smaller garden or grown in big containers. Japanese Maples can attain the height of 8-9 meters in fifty years depending on cultivar. These types of tress should be planted in the Autumn and kept in a sheltered area with some sun exposure. They are very easy to maintain, a perfect plant to have in your garden, by your front door or even inside providing it is getting enough light and water. The perfect type of soil to grow a Japanese Maple tree is moderately acidic, sandy and well drained. These trees will not indulge wet, dry or alkaline conditions. These trees are perfect for growing in a small and compact space, because they tend to have fibrous roots which ensures they are not too crowded. For more info on Japanese Maple Tree’s, Click Here! • Tania Shillam

Tom Boswell Tree Services Ltd came like a knight in shining armour and sorted out our a tree felled by an overnight storm and in next-door’s garden. After a visit in the morning to asses and give a quote, three guys came and worked so amazingly efficiently, safely, astonishingly quickly and cleared up the felled part and cut down the standing part. This tree was three storeys high.
I’m so grateful to them. The problem didn’t last the day because of them. Neighbour’s not mad. Everyone happy.

  • Unni Einemo

This company was friendly and professional at every stage from initial enquiry to job done. They did exactly what was needed to reduce my overgrown tree and tidied up properly. I would recommend them to anyone looking for qualified tree surgeons that also understand what the customer wants, and where everyone was a pleasure to deal with.

  • Tree of Heaven Removal

This very large  Tree of Heaven, growing in Chiswick, West London, had to be removed as it was too close to the neighbouring buildings and properties.

It is always sad day for us tree loving folk to remove such a large tree, but often there is no other choice.

See our blog on Tree Planting and Choice for more information on this topic.

This species of tree is native to the rain forests of India and is notorious for very brittle timber and shedding of large limbs. It grows very quickly, with a mature size often too large for most London gardens. It prolifically self-seeds as well with hundreds of saplings arisings from a parent tree. In certain areas they can be classed as an invasive species and are typically classed as high maintenance trees often requiring intervention from a tree surgeon on a regular basis in order to keep them maintained and suitable for their location. Especially in built up urban areas!

Given the location and size of the tree, this was a particularly challenging and demanding operation which took our qualified and experienced team two days to complete.

Advanced aerial tree rigging techniques were required in order to ensure a safe, controlled dismantling process to minimise disruption to the surrounding areas. See our Tree Removal page for more information.

This involved the use of specialist rigging ropes attached to the sections being removed, secured to the tree using slings, carabiners and friction saving pulleys. The cut sections were safely and smoothly lowered to the ground by the groundsman using a friction management device known as a bollard.

Once safely on the floor, the cut sections were processed and loaded onto our trucks to be carted off site.

One of the requirements of the job was to remove the stump and extensive surface root system.

For this job we opted for the use of a large, hydraulically operated stump grinder to ensure we ground down to the required depth so that the area could be put to better use in the future. This also helped in significantly lowering vibration levels felt by the machine operator, compared to smaller manually operated machines and greatly improved the efficiency of the task.
